Joseph T. Willy

Joseph T. Willy

Joseph Thomas Willy passed away on Saturday, November 11. He was born in Columbia on September 26, 1941, to the late Joseph John Willy and the late Helen Minnich Willy.

"Joe" was a member of the 1960 graduating class of Columbia and was employed by the Lancaster Newspaper, a job that he enjoyed, for over 40 years. He is the husband of Michaelene Doyle Willy, whom he married on Saturday, November 21, 1964.

"Joe" was always reading. He enjoyed a variety of topics and willingly shared his acquired knowledge with others. Before brain cancer that had metastasized from his lung curbed his activities, "Joe" could be found gardening with information, acquired from frequent trips to Longwood and Winterthur.

His "spare time" was also filled with walking, woodworking, listening to music, attending symphonies and traveling (trips to Italy, Ireland, and Scotland were among his favorites).

His love of music ranged from selections by the group Chicago to George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" to works by Prokofiev. The Broadway Musicals, "Phantom" and "Les Mis", were among his favorites.

"Joe's" trips to New York City with his friends and discussions of "foods sampled there" were always a source of fun for weeks afterwards.

"Joe" was a compassionate, considerate man who enjoyed living, laughing, and learning.

He was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and served as one of the church's ushers.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held from Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fourth and Cherry Streets, Columbia, PA on Thursday, November 16, 2017 at 10:00 AM with the Rev. Fr. Stephen P. Kelley as Celebrant. Final Commendation and Farewell will be in Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery. A viewing will be held on Thursday at the Church from 9:00 AM 10:00 AM. The Rosary will be recited at 9:20AM.

The family request that flowers be omitted. Memorial contributions in Joe's memory may be made to Hospice & Community Care, PO Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125. This community is truly blessed to have Hospice as its neighbor.
