Laurence A. Meley, 81, of Columbia died Monday, November 27, 2017 at
home. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, he was the son of the late Nicholas J.
and Margaret McKenna Meley.
Larry graduated from Columbia High
School in 1953 and received his B.A. from the Catholic University of
America in Washington D.C. and continued his education in Sorbonne,
Paris where he received his master's degree in French language arts. He
retired from the Pequea Valley School District where he taught for many
years, English, French and Spanish.
He was an active member of
Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Columbia, and was a member of the Knights
of Columbus Council 2294. He was a member of the American Association of
French; past president of the Lancaster Chapter of the PA State
Teachers Association and past president of the Pequea Valley Education
served in the U.S. Army in Europe in the Army's intelligence unit. He
will be remembered by his family for his wicked sense of humor.
is survived by his brothers, Joseph J. married to Holly (Fisher) Mele;
William N. married to Shirley (Heistand) Meley; James G. married to
Jennifer (Fisher) Meley; Patrick F. Meley and many nieces and nephews.
His sisters Kathleen and Moira Meley preceded him in death.
of Christian Burial will be held from Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 409
Cherry St., Columbia, PA 17512 on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 12 noon
with the Rev. Stephen P. Kelley, Celebrant. Burial will follow in Holy
Trinity Catholic Cemetery. A reception at the parish hall will follow
the interment. There will be no public viewing; however, the family will
receive friends one hour prior to the mass. Please omit flowers.
