Robert Vincent McCarthy, Jr.

Robert Vincent McCarthy, Jr., 86, of Columbia passed away on August 1st,2018. He was born in Columbia to the late Robert, Sr. and Margaret Hohenadel McCarthy and was a graduate of Columbia High School. Robert proudly served in the United States Army and National Guard. Following his service, he attended Penn State University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He also attended Franklin and Marshall College, earning a masters of physics. Robert worked at Armstrong World Industries for many years and retired as a senior research scientist. However, it was his commitment to his community that was his claim to fame. Robert was president of the Columbia Library for more than forty years and a volunteer for more than sixty. He was also involved with the Columbia Jaycees and most recently the Columbia Historical Preservation Society. Robert was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, and brother who adored his family and was proud of his grandchildren.

Robert leaves behind his children, Tom, husband of Linda McCarthy of West Hempfield, Sue, wife of Bob Leggett of Atlanta, GA; two grandchildren, Amy, wife of John Ridgway of Atlanta, Jeff, husband of Mariana Leggett of Elizabethtown; four great grandchildren, Maddie, Marley, Elyse, and Kingston; a sister, Margaret Campbell of Plano, TX. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Shirley Swingler McCarthy in 2010 and a sister, Pat Scholl.

A celebration of Robert's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 10, 2018 at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, 519 Walnut St, Columbia, PA 17512. The family will receive friends for visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. until service time.
